Pillay is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Concordia University in Montreal. He earned his B.Eng. and M.S. degrees in South Africa and his Ph.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1987. Prior to joining Concordia in 2008, he held faculty positions at Newcastle University, the University of New Orleans, and Clarkson University.

He is an IEEE Life Fellow, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), U.K., and a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. His honors include South Africa's Order of Mapungubwe and the 2015 IEEE Industry Applications Society Outstanding Achievement Award. His research has strengthened the modeling, design, and control of electric machines and motor drive systems used in industrial, transportation, and renewable energy applications worldwide.

The IEEE Nikola Tesla Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the generation and utilization of electric power. Named in honor of Nikola Tesla, it is among IEEE's most prestigious Board of Directors-approved Technical Field Awards, recognizing technical achievement and leadership that have significantly advanced the systems that generate, deliver, and apply electric power.
